There have been many GUI bug fixes since the 4.4 release. I would recommend upgrading to the latest version (currently 5.2.0) and seeing if the problem persists.
you are running an older version of Octave. It sounds like this is something happening repeatedly? If the window has disappeared how do you close it? Are you killing the process in some other way? or do you mean just the command window portion of the GUI has disappeared and the rest of the window is still showing, and you can exit normally? I will make a few guesses / suggestions below (Absent any further information I'll assume you're using Windows, and are running Windows 10.):
