The one benefit here is that Sledgehammer Games’ previous title, WWII, had a ranked mode and it was also called Ranked Play, containing an excellent iteration of this competitive mode that was what we expected from it, giving hope that Vanguard might follow in its footsteps. All we know is that it will include competitive modes, ranked skill divisions, visible skill ratings, and new competitive rewards. With the name change in Vanguard, this tells us that, hopefully, Treyarch has learned from what it did in Cold War and will offer a more traditional experience in Vanguard. This was disappointing for many, including myself, where, sure, it encouraged players to show up every week to participate in the next league ladder, but it lacked the impact of other games, including past Call of Duty titles. Having a weekly format where there are two different league groupings every week that you can participate in, letting you move through those ranks for a few days and then it ends, giving you gem rewards to move your overall rank felt a little too quick and lacked complexity in the way that it should. League Play is great for following the Call of Duty League so closely in rules and the like, but it failed in many players’ eyes for its implementation. It is likely to be an experience that is largely similar to what we saw with Black Ops Cold War’s League Play this year, but, hopefully, learning from the mistakes of that mode. This means that players should expect the ranked game mode to have only four players on each team in a match, even though Vanguard can have way more than in normal play as we saw in the beta, and only a handful of maps that are going to be live in this mode.
